Faro acquires GeoSlam, the leader in mobile scanning

Faro acquires GeoSlam and now has a wide range of reality capture solutions.

22 million is the amount Faro had to spend to acquire GeoSlam. In September 2022, Faro announced the acquisition of GeoSlam, a provider of mobile scanning solutions with proprietary simultaneous location and mapping (SLAM) software. SLAM involves mapping an area while keeping track of the sensor's location in that area. It allows large areas to be mapped in a much shorter time than tripod-based laser scanning, although the accuracy is not as high.

The acquisition of GeoSlam is expected to accelerate the US company's market growth opportunity in mobile scanning. It also allows Faro to expand its portfolio of reality capture solutions.

"We are excited to add GeoSLAM's portable 3D scanning technology to our portfolio of leading data capture solutions," said Michael Burger, president and CEO of Faro. "Faro now offers the industry's broadest range of 4D data capture solutions, including 3,600 camera-based images, mobile scanning and high-precision stationary laser scanning, allowing customers to balance the need for accuracy, speed and detail to suit their requirements. [...] We welcome the GeoSLAM team to the Faro family."

Faro comes to compete with Leica, which launched its SLAM scanner, the BLK2GO, then the BLK ARC in 2020 and 2021. The market is expanding, there are now many solutions for reality capture, such as the Viametris BMS3D, NavVis VLX etc.. However, few applications allow you to easily visualize and share your point clouds.

On ATIS.cloud you can import your point clouds, no matter the original scanner. Discover our projects capturing with mobile solution:
